#1. Choose the Right Variety
There are three main types of blueberries: high-bush, rabbit-eye, and southern high-bush. But there are also dwarf varieties which are suitable for growing in containers. The high-bush variety is suitable for colder climates. If you choose this type of blueberries then we recommend Earliblue‘, ‘Collins‘; Mid: ‘Blueray‘, ‘Bluecrop‘ which are early varieties and ‘Jersery‘, ‘Patriot’ which are late varieties.
#2. Plant in Late Autumn or Early Spring
The absolute best time to plant blueberries is in late autumn or early spring. This gives them the change to grow,grab their minerals from the ground, and be ready for harvest in the summer. Be sure to choose a 2-3 year old nursery plants as they transplant well.
#3. Choose the Right Soil
Blueberries are pretty picky about the soil they're in, so make sure you plant them in loose, acidic, and well drained soil. The ideal pH should be between 4-5, and the soil should be kept moist.
#4. Plant Right & Space Right
Space each blueberry plant about 4-5 feet apart, and rows 9-10 feet apart. Make sure the roots are well spread in the hole, and dig a hole that's 20 inches deep and 18 inches wide.
#5. Mulching
Apply a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around your plants to keep the soil moist. As mentioned above, blueberry bushes like their soil moist, so this step is important!
#6. Watering
Blueberries like to be watered about once a week and deeply. Water about 2 inches of water weekly.
