Watermelons are one of the tastiest fruits, and are especially popular during the hot, summer months. Great in fruit salads or just on their own, watermelon helps keep you cool and ensures you get all your vitamins and minerals. Today we'll show you how to grow watermelon from seeds! Keep in mind that watermelon love the warmth, so make sure your summer is long and warm enough before you plant!
How to Grow Watermelon
Planting:
- If you live in a warmer area, you can sow seeds directly into the soil. Make sure the soil temperature is at least 70F.
- If you live in a colder climate, start the seeds indoors about a month before transplanting.
- Before transplanting, make sure ALL danger of frost has passed as watermelon vines are very tender and sensitive.
- Amend the soil with aged manure, seaweed, or compost before planting. Watermelon love to feed, so make sure to keep them happy!
- Space the seeds about two feet apart, and, if, possible, plant on a hill as this will retain moisture and heat.
Care:
- Mulch with plastic to keep the soil warm and hinder any weed growths.
- Watermelon plants need about 1-2 inches of water per week. Make sure they're always moist, but not waterlogged.
- Once fruit are growing, reduce watering. Dry weather will produce the sweetest of watermelon!
- If you choose to fertilize, use a liquid seaweed fertilizer for best results.
Harvesting:
- Watermelon do not keep ripening after they are picked, so it's important to know when to harvest!
- Thump the watermelon: if it sounds hollow, it's ripe!
- Check the color on top of the watermelon: it will be ripe when there is little contrast between the stripes.
Happy Planting!

Please, which is the best time in the year to plant watermelon? Someone told me that the best time to plant watermelon is when the weather is hot. If this is true, then how would a dry land germinate the watermelon seed without water. Would one need to wet the land before the seed is planted, and continuously water the seed to enable it grow. Kindly advice.
Hi Stephen, You should sow watermelon seeds once the weather outside starts to warm up and the soil is at least 70F. Also, all danger of frost has to have passed. Depending on where you live, this season could either be spring or summer. As with anything, soil needs to be moist in order for seeds to germinate. So if you have dry soil, you must wet it thoroughly before planting the seed. Then, continue watering the seedling on a regular basis. The soil should always be moist but never water logged. Once watermelons start to grow, you can cut… Read more »
