Geraniums are a common houseplant because they're very easy to grow and bring a lot of color! With enough light and a little bit of care, geraniums can be kept indoors all year long, but they can also be grown outdoors in warm seasons. Today we'll show you how to grow geraniums in pots or in your garden.
How to Grow Geraniums
Planting Geraniums:
- When you're purchasing geraniums, it's important you look at their size and color. Look for sturdy stems and no discoloration on the leaves.
- Choose a large enough pot with drainage holes. This will prevent any root rot.
- If you're using a saucer underneath your pot, make sure that it contains pebbles, otherwise you can risk root rot.
- When planting in pots or containers, use soil-less potting mix and not dirt.
- To get full blooms, place your geranium plants in an area where they will receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight a day.
Caring for Geraniums:
- Allow the plant to dry in between watering.
- During colder, winter months, water less, but do not let roots get completely dry.
- Encourage more blooms by deadheading spent flowers.
- To get a bushy geranium plant, pinch the stems.
- During growth, fertilize every 2 weeks using a water-soluble fertilizer at half strength.
- Avoid fertilizing during winter months.
- To refresh your geranium plants, re-pot every spring or every other spring.
Happy Planting!
