How to Grow Pomegranates in Pots – a DIY Gardening Guide
Planting Pomegranates:
- Pomegranate trees are self fruiting, so you'll only need one!
- Find a large, 10 gallon container.
- Fill the container one quarter full of potting soil.
- Set the root ball in the container and begin to fill around the roots with soil.
- Be sure not to cover the trunk.
- Water the new tree well and tamp down.
- Pomegranates are warm weather fruits, so you'll need to keep it outdoors in the summer in a sunny area.
- In the winter, bring the tree indoors and place it in a south facing window.
Caring for Pomegranates in Pots:
- Water the tree deeply once a week.
- Fertilize with half a cup of 10-10-10.
- Do this by spreading the fertilizer atop the soil and about 2 inches away from the trunk.
- Water the food into the soil.
- During the first two years of the tree's growth, feed in November, February, May, and after that, only fertilize in November and February.
- After the tree's first year, prune any crossing branches or shoots, leaving only 3-5 per branch.
- Within two years, your tree should be producing delicious pomegranates that will last up to 6 months in a cool, dark place!
