A cool weather crop, broccoli can do very well in containers, and can be planted as late as August! How to Grow Broccoli in Pots or Containers
Planting Broccoli in Pots:
- Broccoli like to spread out wide, so be sure to only plant one per 5 gallon container.
- Alternatively, you can plant 2-3 broccoli plants in a 15 gallon container.
- Avoid planting in black containers, as the sun can really heat them up, and when it comes to broccoli, temperature is everything (remember, they are a cold hardy crop).
- Plant in the fall directly into the soil or start seeds indoors.
- Broccoli will germinate at 75-80F (23-27C).
- Water immediately after planting and place in a sunny location.
Potted Broccoli Care:
- Feed your broccoli plants on a regular basis with a nitrogen rich fertilizer.
- Be on the lookout for the following pests: cutworms, cabbage worms, aphids, and armyworms.
- If planting more than one broccoli plant in a container, space them 2-3 feet apart to prevent infestation.
- For cutworms, wrap flower heads in a cone of wax paper.
