Planting Corn in Pots or Containers:

  • Choose a dwarf variety of corn that does not exceed 4 or 5 feet. Some good varieties are short stemmed Trinity and Sweet Painted Mountain corns.
  • Sow 4-6 seeds per pot about 1 inch deep and cover them with a thin layer of soil.
  • Use a good quality gardening soil (a peat based potting soil will work best) and make sure your pot has an adequate number of drainage holes.
  • Position your pot or container in a sunny spot, and give it plenty of water.
  • Mulch around the corn to hold moisture.
  • You can use wood chips, newspaper, or grass to help keep moisture in.

Care:

  • Water your corn plant every other day.
  • Add fertilizer about 10 weeks after sowing. Dig a small hole about 2cm in depth around each plant. Pour 1/2 tablespoon of 5-10-10 or 10-20-20 fertilizer per plant, and incorporate the soil.
  • Harvest after 60-100 days.
