How to Grow An Endless Supply of Garlic at Home
You'll Need:
- 1 garlic bulb
- potting soil
- 1 container
Directions:
- Choose a nice looking, healthy garlic head.
- Fill a large pot with potting soil.
- Separate the garlic cloves and place each clove vertically into the soil, to about 1 inch in depth.
- Cover the cloves with 1 inch of soil.
- Place the potted garlic in an area where it will receive sun.
- Water immediately after planting and continue watering once soil is dry to the touch.
- Cut the greens once they are 3-4 inches tall, but leave about an inch so that they can regrow.
- Once they dry up and turn brown, dig the cloves out. Each one should have formed into an entire bulb.
- Take the cloves from the dug up bulb and start again!
This is a great and super cheap way to grow garlic at home, without much maintenance or fuss! This is also a really good way to grow in a small space such as on a balcony or even in an apartment.
If you have south facing windows, you can also grow garlic indoors!

Do you need to take the peel off of the cloves before planting?
Hi Amanda,
No, the cloves should not be peeled before planting.
HOW LONG IT TAKES BEFORE THEY ARE READY TO PICK?
Hi James,
When the lower leaves of the plant have died back and turned brown, the garlic is ready to harvest 🙂
Why do you cut the greens?
You cut them so that the plant focuses it’s energy on the cloves and not the leaves.
How long would they take for a full bulb?
Hi there!
Garlic is usually ready to harvest once the lower leaves have died and turned brown 🙂
Planted mine, thanks….seem to be doing well now in my mini greenhouse, and almost ready for their first chop. I presume the bits I trim off before maturity will be good to cook with or use as a garnish. What sort of timeframe can I expect, roughly, before they might be ready to harvest as garlic bulbs, please?
Do you need to cut the greens each time they grow to 4 inches before they turn brown, or stop cutting after the first time?
